antique-german-toy-sewing-machine-original-box-1900s-child-hand-crank
Antique German Toy Sewing Machine Original Box 1900s Child Hand Crank
Antique German Hand-Crank Toy Sewing Machine in Original Decorative Box, c. 1900–1930

A wonderful early 20th-century survivor: a small German-made child's hand-crank sewing machine, housed in its original lithographed wood and paper-covered box. A rare find with the box still present — most of these machines lost their original cases generations ago.

THE SEWING MACHINE

Pressed steel construction with elegant gold and red scrollwork decoration on a black ground. Hand-crank flywheel, wooden thread spool still in place with original cotton thread, and a separate iron table clamp included. The stitch plate is clearly stamped "MADE IN GERMANY" — the absence of a "British Zone" designation indicates pre-1945 manufacture, most likely 1900s–1930s. Almost certainly made by Casige, Müller, or a similar German firm that exported these as affordable working toys to Sears, Roebuck and other catalogs.

THE BOX

Wood construction covered in chromolithograph paper in the Renaissance Revival style — deep tortoiseshell ground with octagonal central medallion of green and red foliate scrollwork, gilt borders, and patterned sides. The pink crepe-paper interior features a decorative needle/thread holder card. Original hinges and latch intact.

BONUS

Includes a clipping from Country Living magazine, July 1995, "Toy Sewing Machines" by Ruth Stahl — a charming bit of provenance from the previous collector who clearly treasured this piece.

CONDITION

Honest, age-appropriate wear consistent with 100+ years of use. The box shows paint loss to the front panel of the lid, edge wear, and scuffing — please review all photos carefully. Some surface rust on the metal parts of the machine. The hand crank turns. Sold as a display/collector piece rather than a working machine. Photographed thoroughly so you know exactly what you're getting.

MEASUREMENTS

Box: 7.5" x 6.5" x 3" (closed)
Weight: 1 lb 1.3 oz

A characterful piece for collectors of antique sewing memorabilia, dollhouse and miniature enthusiasts, vintage-styled sewing rooms, or anyone drawn to the small, well-made things of the past.

Ships carefully packed via USPS.
