A three-tier Satsuma stacked box (jubako) from the Taishō–Shōwa period, circa 1912–1930s, decorated with a continuous design of autumn maple leaves in iron-red, gold, and soft green enamels against a cream crackle ground. The form descends from the traditional Japanese jubako, a tiered vessel used to present sweets and seasonal foods. Satsuma is a hand-decorated earthenware, recognized by its warm ivory body and fine crackled glaze. This piece carries a single seasonal subject — momiji, the Japanese maple in autumn — drawn in fine gold outline across all three tiers and the domed lid, with raised gilt detailing the leaf veins. Pieces given over to one disciplined motif, rather than crowded panels, reflect a more considered hand. The base bears a red ground seal mark reading Uchida (内田) in gold, a recorded Satsuma workshop signature of the Taishō–Shōwa period. Measurements: 4.2 inches tall by 4 inches in diameter, fully stacked. Three tiers plus lid, all original to the set. Weight 1 lb 7.2 oz. Condition: expected wear consistent with the age of the piece. There is one chip (approximately 3–5 mm) to the rim of one tier with slight body exposure, shown clearly in the photographs. The crackle glaze is original to the ware and is a characteristic of Satsuma, not a flaw. Gilt shows light, even wear consistent with age. Please review all photos as part of the description.
