A pair of Satsuma vases from the Taishō–Shōwa period, circa 1912–1930s, each decorated with a continuous design of autumn maple leaves — momiji — in iron-red, gold, and soft green enamels against a cream crackle ground. The ovoid bodies rise to gilt-rimmed mouths and rest on gilt foot rings with fine geometric borders.
Satsuma is a hand-decorated earthenware, recognized by its warm ivory body and finely crackled glaze. Across both vases the maple branches are drawn in delicate gold outline, each leaf veined in gilt — a single seasonal subject carried with restraint rather than crowded panels, the mark of a more considered hand.
The base of each vase bears a red ground seal mark reading Uchida (内田) in gold, a recorded Satsuma workshop signature of the Taishō–Shōwa period.
Measurements: each vase 4.5 inches tall, 3 inches in diameter, with a 2 inch mouth opening. The pair together weighs 2 lb 1.6 oz. Sold as a matched pair, both original to the set.
Condition: expected wear consistent with the age of the pieces. There is notable wear to the gilding, particularly along the mouth rims and foot rings, with gold loss visible in these areas — shown clearly in the photographs. No chips and no cracks; the pieces are structurally sound. The crackle glaze is original to the ware and is a characteristic of Satsuma, not a flaw.
