A vintage Beswick "Susie Jamaica" figurine, model number 1347, depicting a market woman seated sidesaddle on a laden donkey with woven panniers. Finished in the gloss glaze with a yellow bodice, rose-and-gold headwrap, beaded necklaces, and red slippers, set on a naturalistic mottled green-brown base.
Modelled by Graham Orwell and introduced by the Beswick pottery of Longton, Staffordshire, in 1954. The model remained in production until 1975, making this one of the firm's longer-running figurative subjects from the mid-century period.
The underside carries the incised "BESWICK · ENGLAND 1347" mould mark together with the printed oval Beswick England backstamp and the gilt hand-script title "Susie Jamaica." This combination of incised number, printed oval mark, and gilt script title is consistent with earlier production rather than the later 1990s reissue.
Hand-painted throughout with crisp detailing to the facial features, jewellery, plaid saddle blanket, and basketwork texture. The glaze is bright and even, and the gilt lettering to the base remains clear and legible.
Condition: excellent. Examined closely at the common stress points — the donkey's ear tips, the figure's red slippers, the basket rims, and the gilt accents — with no chips, cracks, hairlines, restoration, or losses found. Minimal surface wear consistent with age and careful storage.
Measurements: approximately 7.5 in (19 cm) high, 5.5 in long, 3 in wide. Weight 1 lb 0.7 oz before packing.
