Set of six Vari-Vue lenticular pinback buttons produced for Pan American World Airways' 1980 acquisition of National Airlines. Each pin carries the slogan "Pan Am Goes National" and a lenticular Pan Am globe that shifts between blue and multicolor feathered patterns as the pin is tilted.
"Pan Am Goes National" was the official slogan of the 1980 merger that gave Pan Am its first U.S. domestic route network. Vari-Vue, based in Mount Vernon, New York, was the pioneer manufacturer of lenticular ("flicker") printing and produced promotional pieces for major brands and campaigns. A lenticular pin from this same Pan Am campaign is held in the collection of the Pan Am Historical Foundation museum, and complete sets of six are uncommon.
Each pin is marked on the reverse "Vari-Vue — Mt Vernon, N.Y. — Pat No 2,815,310" with an intact pinback.
Each pin measures approximately 2.25 in in diameter. The set ships packed at 6 × 5 × 3 in, total weight 1 lb including packaging.
Condition: expected wear consistent with age. The lenticular surfaces show minor scuffing and the brass rims show light patina; all six retain clear images and functional pinbacks. Refer to photos for exact condition of each pin.
